Ms S 129: Hill Family Papers
Penmanship book of Asa Hill, c. 1834; an account book and receipts of Ira B. Hill, 1891-1902, owner of livery stable. (11 items)

The Hill family was from New Hampshire. Asa Hill, the father, lived in Lyndeboro. After his death in 1893, his son, Ira B. Hill, came to Andover. Fred Hill, Ira's brother, was already working in Andover as grounds superintendent at Phillips Academy. Ira and his wife, Emma, first worked at the Mansion House, an inn; Ira as meat cutter, Emma as housekeeper. From about 1895 to 1902, Ira owned the Mansion House Stables, which rented our horses and carriages. He may have been burned out. He died in 1922, having spent most of the intervening years working for the Lawrence Gas and Electric Co.

A biographical sketch, gleaned from an interview with Ira's daughter, Marion, is in the Vertical File. Photographs of the family are to be found under 1982.1-11. An information sheet on the family has been given the number 1981.15.

Asa Hill's penmanship book of the 1830's was saved by the family. The rest of the material belonged to Ira B. Hill. It consists of two account books, one from 1891 to 1895 covers settlements of Asa's death and the beginning of the Mansion House stables; the second covers 9 months in 1901. Following are six bills and a receipt from the Mansion House era.
