NOTE
These papers: Letters
and deeds, are mostly concerned with selling the property of Samuel
McLanathan, 1782-1863, in Andover. He was born in Rutland< Mass. In
1782 and lived in Lowell; on Lowell Street and on Summer Street in
Andover. He owned land on Summer Street, also in West Parrish,
Hillsborough, New Hampshire and Portland, Maine. His widow, born
Keziah Leland of Sherborn, Mass. Sold the Summer Street house and
land to Abraham S. Barnard in 1805. They had eleven children, of
whom Emily, b. 1805, married Chauncy S. Colton; Samuel, Jr., b. 1814
and Ella Augusta who married Alex McLane of Dorchester appear in
these papers. Samuel, Jr. had five children by three wives. By
Elizabeth Dickey, he had Elizabeth, who married Dr. Charles Packard;
Myra, who married Alfred Hemenway: and Frederick W. McLanathan. By
her sister Sarah Dickey, he had Edward Payson who died young. By his
third wife, Hannah Maria Edwards of Portland he had Ann Burt. The
three children by his first wife appear in these papers.
