Ms S 212: Samuel Jenkins, 1775-c.1845 Papers
Chiefly deeds, of four generations of Samuel Jenkinses,
1765-1846 (29 items)
HISTORICAL
NOTE
This collection
consists almost entirely of deeds, dated between 1765 and 1846. Most
of them, sixteen of thirty-seven, belonged to Samuel (6) Jenkins,
1775-c.1845. Others were written by his grandfather Samuel (4) , C.
1708—1785; his father Samuel (5), c. 1742-1777; and his sons Samuel
(7), b. 1803 and Ebenezer (7), 1807-1883 his widow Lydia Damon
Jenkins, d. 1856 and his daughter Lydia Jenkins Holt, b. 1801, wife
of Ballard Holt.
To complicate matters,
there were other men named Samuel Jenkins in Andover at the time.
Samuel (4) b. 1790 had a son named Ben (5), 1756-1834, whose son
Samuel (6) b. 1790 had sons Samuel W. (7) b. 1813, and Albert H.
Jenkins, b.c.1820. Samuel (7) had one deed in this collection as
grantor to Samuel Jenkins, probably Samuel W. and one as grantee
from Albert H. Jenkins. The collection also contains Samuel (6)
Jenkins’ will, 1829.
There are also deeds
and other papers between the estate of Ezra Damon and Benjamin Holt
of reading, George W. Ford and the same Benjamin Holt , and James
and Charles Cheever in the collection.
The collection has been
divided into eight parts, by individuals. Under each person, deeds
as grantor as listed before these as grantee.
Used in writing this
note were typewritten notes by Charlotte Helen Abbott on the Jenkins
family.
The collection was
given to the Society in 1939 by Alice C. Jenkins, grand-daughter of
Ebenezer. It has the Accession Number 1939-64.
Processed by Mary F. Morgan,
December 1982.
